Glendale’s Infinity Park Hosts USA Rugby Collegiate 7s National Championships
For the second year running, Glendale’s Infinity Park will host the USA Rugby Collegiate Sevens National Championships. Taking place during the weekend of May 18-20, 2018, the best Men’s and Women’s Division I and II sides in the country will vie for top honors.
A variant of rugby union play, Rugby Sevens is a faster-paced version of the sport, with smaller teams and considerably shorter game duration. Instead of the usual fifteen-player teams playing forty-minute halves, Rugby Sevens features seven players to a team and seven minute halves. The short duration places an emphasis on conditioning and endurance, and means that an entire tournament can be played over the course of a weekend.
Friday, May 18 through Sunday, May 20, 2018, more than forty teams from colleges across the nation will gather to compete for National titles in Men’s and Women’s Division I and II play. Men’s D1 and D2 matches will be held on May 18-19, and Women’s D1 and Open matches will be held on May 19-20. A comprehensive match schedule, as well as a list of participating teams is forthcoming.
Since the 2009 announcement of the return of rugby 7s play to the 2016 Summer Olympics, the popularity of the discipline has skyrocketed. Founded in 2011, the USA Rugby Collegiate Sevens National Championships have drawn the nation’s best young talent, producing competition at the highest level.
